Hash Halper :
VR Experience

This project is an immersive VR tribute to the late and beloved New York City street artist, Hash Halper. Inspired by his life and the community that formed around his work, the experience began as a 3D mockup for a potential real-world monument and evolved into the ability to stand in a virtual park with his work. The goal was to create a digital space to celebrate his art, his spirit, and the joy he brought to the city.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was to create a tribute that was deeply respectful and authentic to Hash's spirit. This project carried a significant emotional weight, and it was crucial to honor his memory for his friends and family. A major technical task was the archival process of sourcing hundreds of images of his chalk words and hearts online, manually converting each one into a digital asset, and placing them throughout the realistic virtual park. The final challenge was to build a feeling, not just a 3D scene. This meant creating a hyper-realistic NYC inspired park populated with static figures of happy people to evoke a joyful frozen moment in time, and using real NYC park audio to make the experience feel genuinely transportive.

The Outcome

The final result is a powerful and emotional VR experience that serves as a living monument to Hash Halper. By surrounding the viewer with hundreds of his actual chalk hearts, his paintings, and videos of his life, the experience creates an overwhelming sense of his presence. When exhibited alongside his physical artwork in a gallery in Bushwick Brooklyn, the VR tribute received a profoundly moving response from Hash's friends and family. Many expressed that it felt like they were right there with him in the park again, a testament to the project's success in capturing his spirit and creating a beautiful, lasting space for remembrance.
